Calabash is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 2,320 people and three associated neighborhoods, Calabash is the 308th largest community in North Carolina.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 7.41% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Calabash has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Calabash has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Calabash than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Calabash may be for you.
Calabash is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.
As is often the case in a small town, Calabash doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The education level of Calabash citizens, measured as those with bachelor's degrees or advanced degrees, is similar to the national average for all American cities and towns. 18.07% of adults 25 and older in Calabash have a college degree.
The per capita income in Calabash in 2022 was $27,818, which is middle income relative to North Carolina, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $111,272 for a family of four. However, Calabash contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
Calabash is a very ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Calabash home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Calabash residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Calabash also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 11.44% of the town’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Calabash include Irish, German, English, Italian, and Scottish.
The most common language spoken in Calabash is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Other Asian languages.
