Athens is a very small village located in the state of New York. With a population of 1,577 people and two associated neighborhoods, Athens is the 663rd largest community in New York. Much of the housing stock in Athens was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic villages in the country.

Of important note, Athens is also a village of artists. Athens has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Athens’s character.

Also of interest is that Athens has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

(Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Athens has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Athens has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Athens than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. Athens is one of the most well-educated cities in the nation. 40.38% of adults in Athens have at least a bachelor's degree. Compare that to the average community in America, which has just 21.84% with a bachelor's degree or higher.

The per capita income in Athens in 2022 was $48,100, which is upper middle income relative to New York, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $192,400 for a family of four. However, Athens contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Athens is a very ethnically-diverse village. The people who call Athens home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Athens residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Athens also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 12.97% of the village’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Athens include Irish, Italian, German, English, and Dutch.

The most common language spoken in Athens is English. Other important languages spoken here include Polish and Spanish.
