York is a somewhat small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Maine. With a population of 13,998 people and three associated neighborhoods, York is the 16th largest community in Maine. York home prices are not only among the most expensive in Maine, but York real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.York is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 89.66% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, York is a town of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in York who work in management occupations (10.77%), office and administrative support (10.11%), and sales jobs (8.62%). Also of interest is that York has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US. One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 22.82% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. Another notable thing is that York is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, York’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live. In addition, York is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness'. But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel. Because of many things, York is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making York a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, York has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, York’s overall crime rate is lower than average for the country. One of the nice things about York is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities. Do you like to read, write and learn? If you move to York, you'll likely find that many of your neighbors like to as well. York is one of the more educated communities in America, with a full 50.27% of its adults having a college degree or even advanced degree, compared to a national average across all communities of 21.84%. The per capita income in York in 2022 was $53,529, which is wealthy relative to Maine and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $214,116 for a family of four. The people who call York home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of York residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in York include Irish, English, Italian, German, and French.
