Calabash is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 2,320 people and three associated neighborhoods, Calabash is the 308th largest community in North Carolina.Calabash is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Calabash is a town of service providers, construction workers and builders, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Calabash who work in food service (14.86%), maintenance occupations (12.48%), and sales jobs (12.29%). One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 7.41% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Calabash has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Calabash a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here. Calabash is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities. As is often the case in a small town, Calabash doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute. The percentage of adults in Calabash who are college-educated is close to the national average for all communities of 21.84%: 18.07% of the adults in Calabash have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
