Washington is a somewhat small borough located in the state of New Jersey. With a population of 7,345 people and two associated neighborhoods, Washington is the 255th largest community in New Jersey. Much of the housing stock in Washington was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic boroughs in the country.Unlike some boroughs where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Washington is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Washington is a borough of sales and office workers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Washington who work in office and administrative support (14.72%), sales jobs (11.85%), and management occupations (8.98%). Also of interest is that Washington has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US. One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 12.90% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. One downside of living in Washington is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Washington, the average commute to work is 34.03 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average. On the other hand, local public transit is widely used in the borough, so leaving the car at home and taking transit is often a viable alternative. Even though Washington is a smaller borough, it has many people who hop on public transportation – mostly the bus for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities. The education level of Washington citizens is a little higher than the average for US cities and towns: 24.84% of adults in Washington have at least a bachelor's degree. The per capita income in Washington in 2022 was $34,521, which is low income relative to New Jersey, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $138,084 for a family of four. However, Washington contains both very wealthy and poor people as well. Washington is a very ethnically-diverse borough. The people who call Washington home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Washington residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Washington also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 12.07% of the borough’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Washington include German, Italian, English, Irish, and Polish. The most common language spoken in Washington is English.
