Big Bear City profile

Living in Big Bear City

Big Bear City is a somewhat small town located in the state of California. With a population of 12,738 people and six associated neighborhoods, Big Bear City is the 384th largest community in California.

Housing costs in Big Bear City are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in California.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 14.92% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Another notable thing is that Big Bear City is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town’s population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Big Bear City has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Big Bear City has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Big Bear City than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Big Bear City may be for you.

As is often the case in a small town, Big Bear City doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

In terms of college education, Big Bear City is somewhat better educated than the 21.84% who have a 4-year degree or higher in the typical US community: 27.78% of adults 25 and older in the town have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Big Bear City in 2022 was $34,348, which is middle income relative to California and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $137,392 for a family of four. However, Big Bear City contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Big Bear City is a very ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Big Bear City home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Big Bear City residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Big Bear City also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 23.07% of the town’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Big Bear City include German, Irish, English, Polish, and Italian.
